U.S. children and adolescents. More than 50% of children had measles by age 6, and more than 90% had measles by age 15. Encephalitis or death occurred in as many as 0.2% of infected children, resulting in more than 500 deaths annually.\n\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a23c746 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a23c746\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The first live attenuated vaccine was licensed in the U.S. in 1963 (Edmonston B strain). By the late 1960s, the U.S. experienced more than a 99% reduction in reported measles cases. In 2000, measles was declared eliminated from this country.\n\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7c6315 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e7c6315\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Elimination does not mean the absence of cases. However, as of April 11, 555 cases of measles have been reported.\n\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ffd250 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1ffd250\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">In February 1998, The Lancet published a report by Andrew Wakefield and co-workers at the Royal Free College in London proposing a link between measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine and a newly described syndrome of autism and bowel disease. Six years later, the editors of The Lancet described allegations of serious misconduct by the authors of the paper, including a failure to disclose that Wakefield had a significant financial conflict. The paper was retracted in 2010, and Wakefield lost his license to practice medicine in the United Kingdom for unethical behavior, misconduct and dishonesty for authoring a fraudulent research paper.\n\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ac349f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3ac349f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Wakefield\u2019s work is now recognized as an \u201celaborate fraud,\u201d but the damage has been done. Wakefield\u2019s erroneous claim that the MMR vaccine might be associated with autism led to a decline in vaccination rates in many countries, including the United States. Wakefield\u2019s continuing claim that the vaccine is harmful has resulted in a rise in measles.
