data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Travelers' diarrhea is the most predictable travel-related illness and affects 30%-70% of international travelers, depending on destination, season of travel, and other factors. Although most cases of travelers' diarrhea are self-limited and mild to moderate in severity, diarrhea can limit a tourist's itinerary or business activities. Consequently, travelers, particularly in developing countries, are frequently prescribed an antibiotic to self-treat diarrhea, should it develop.\n\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-019ff4e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"019ff4e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">In recent years, research showing antibiotic-mediated disruption of the microbiome and subsequent colonization with resistant organisms has raised concerns about travelers as vehicles for spreading resistance globally as well as possible individual health consequences of acquisition of these resistant organisms.\n\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac82c6d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ac82c6d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The International Society of Travel Medicine convened a group of experts on travelers' diarrhea to review the available evidence and produce clinically relevant and useful recommendations on the management of travelers\u2019 diarrhea. Each recommendation was graded according to its strength and the quality of supporting evidence. Clinicians can refer to the full guidelines for additional information on the recommendations and supporting evidence.\n\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-1fcddbd elementor-reverse-mobile elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no\" data-id=\"1fcddbd\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-bdae49f\" data-id=\"bdae49f\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89b5e05 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"89b5e05\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">For the purpose of these recommendations, the expert panel used the following functional impact definitions to classify travelers' diarrhea:\n\n<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b4ccb86 elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"b4ccb86\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n    <ul class=\"circle_mark-list list\">\n        <li>Mild: diarrhea that is tolerable, not distressing, and does not interfere with planned activities<\/li>\n        <li>Moderate: diarrhea that is distressing or interferes with planned activities<\/li>\n        <li>Severe: diarrhea that is incapacitating or completely prevents planned activities; all dysentery (passage of grossly bloody stools) is considered severe<\/li>\n        <li>Persistent: diarrhea lasting 2 weeks or longer<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-8fd39d1\" data-id=\"8fd39d1\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bbe5b37 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"bbe5b37\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/gfmg.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/diareya.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-8493\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gfmg.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/diareya.jpg 560w, https:\/\/gfmg.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/diareya-64x39.jpg 64w, https:\/\/gfmg.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/diareya-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-08bfc67 elementor-reverse-mobile elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no\" data-id=\"08bfc67\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-3455b10\" data-id=\"3455b10\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8f68b36 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8f68b36\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">New Recommendations\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-81608db elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"81608db\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Prophylaxis for Travelers' Diarrhea\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e539465 elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"e539465\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n    <ul class=\"circle_mark-list list\">\n        <li>Antimicrobial prophylaxis should not be used routinely in travelers (strong recommendation, low\/very low level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Antimicrobial prophylaxis should be considered for travelers at high risk for health-related complications of travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, low\/very low level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Bismuth subsalicylate (BSS) may be considered for any traveler to prevent travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, high level of evidence). BSS has been studied using four divided doses of either 2.1g\/day or 4.2g\/day (with meals and at bedtime). A lower divided dose of 1.05g\/day has also been shown to be preventive, although it is unclear whether it is as effective as the higher doses.<\/li>\n        <li>When antimicrobial prophylaxis is indicated, rifaximin is recommended for all regions (strong recommendation, moderate level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Fluoroquinolones are not recommended for prophylaxis of travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, low\/very low level of evidence).<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18d3974 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"18d3974\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Therapy for Mild Travelers' Diarrhea\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-476abf2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"476abf2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n    <ul class=\"circle_mark-list list\">\n        <li>Antibiotic treatment is not recommended in patients with mild travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, moderate level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Loperamide or BSS may be considered to treat mild travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, moderate level of evidence). The loperamide starting dose is 4mg, followed by an additional 2mg after each additional loose or liquid stool, up to 16mg\/day.<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-223268d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"223268d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Therapy for Moderate Travelers' Diarrhea\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e014548 elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"e014548\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n    <ul class=\"circle_mark-list list\">\n        <li>Antibiotics may be used to treat moderate travelers' diarrhea (weak recommendation, moderate level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Fluoroquinolones may be used to treat moderate travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, moderate level of evidence). However, emergence of resistance to this class of drug, particularly in Southeast Asia, combined with the potential for reduced diversity of intestinal microbiota (dysbiosis) and adverse musculoskeletal consequences (tendon rupture), contribute uncertainties to the risk-benefit assessment, and the guideline authors did not unanimously grade this recommendation.<\/li>\n        <li>Azithromycin may be used to treat moderate travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, high level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Rifaximin may be used to treat moderate travelers' diarrhea (weak recommendation, moderate level of evidence). Clinicians should exercise caution when providing rifaximin for empiric therapy for moderate diarrhea in regions or with itineraries in which the risk for invasive pathogens is high.<\/li>\n        <li>Loperamide may be used as adjunctive therapy for moderate to severe travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, high level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Loperamide may be considered for use as monotherapy in moderate travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, high level of evidence)<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-147a069 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"147a069\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Therapy for Severe Travelers' Diarrhea\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42d5fba elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"42d5fba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n    <ul class=\"circle_mark-list list\">\n        <li>Antibiotics should be used to treat severe travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, high level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Azithromycin is preferred to treat severe travelers' diarrhea, including dysentery (strong recommendation, moderate level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Fluoroquinolones may be used to treat severe, nondysenteric travelers' diarrhea (weak recommendation, moderate level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Rifaximin may be used to treat severe, nondysenteric travelers' diarrhea (weak recommendation, moderate level of evidence).<\/li>\n        <li>Single-dose antibiotic regimens may be used to treat moderate or severe travelers' diarrhea (strong recommendation, high level of evidence).
